Curriculum

Curriculum at Frettenham

At Frettenham we have mixed-aged and Key Stage classes. We embrace and celebrate the opportunities that this structure provides. We have a created a rich, varied and challenging school curriculum to meet our learners’ needs. It reflects where the children come from culturally and prepares them wholly for their future schooling and adult life. There are instances where classes are spilt to allow discrete year group teaching of areas like Maths, Spelling and Guided reading.

The curriculum at Frettenham uses and builds upon the National Curriculum ensuring that children study areas in-depth, in order to secure children’s knowledge and understanding, while providing plenty of opportunity for children to apply what they have learnt.

At Frettenham, we don’t believe that knowledge should be taught in isolated chunks or facts. We have therefore created a set of carefully planned rolling overviews in order that children can apply their knowledge and skills across different subjects and in different contexts. Each subject is planned discretely ensuring subject specific knowledge, vocabulary and skills are carefully considered from the starting point.

Many of the topics are delivered through an Inquiry approach.  Pupils become experts by negotiating an imagined context. They can immerse themselves in a time in history, a geographical location or a story narrative through role-playing, questioning, directing and imagining.

Each study is introduced with overview sheet which is shared with the children. This introduces them to the skills and specific vocabulary which will be included. Through the unit children are able to  refer to  the sheet and record their ideas about the topic and help draw their learning together.

Science, Geography, Art, D&T and History, Music, RE and computing are all taught in units, which are taken directly from the National Curriculum. Each unit is planned in-depth to ensure subject-specific knowledge and skills are learnt in national curriculum stipulated contexts. Children's work, including written pieces, produced during these subjects enables them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills specially for that subject. Work is marked to reflect this.

Trips and visitors are used within each class to enrich the curriculum  further and enable the children to further develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. In addition to trips which enhance the curriculum we have planned projects which the children all experience at certain points of their schooling. These include Charlie-Charlie One, Young Voices,  Shakespeare in Schools and Goblin Racer.

In order to assess the depth of understanding the children have developed through their unit and building on previous learning, POP tasks (Proof of progress), open ended activities and Big Questions are used through the unit to gain additional evidence of their understanding.

Parents who do not want their child to take part in Religious Education lessons or in collective acts of worship should express their wishes in writing to the Headteacher.
